Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is a term used to refer to the occupational nature of the courses offered at higher learning institutions.

This means that TVET colleges serve the purpose of preparing learners for vocational employment opportunities that also enable them to become employers. South Africa currently has fifty registered TVET colleges, but are they tuition-free?

Studying at a public TVET college is not free, however, in order to ensure that they are accessible and affordable, the Department of Higher Education and Training subsidises 80% of the delivery costs, and loans are available to help students pay their tuition fees.

One may also be curious as to who qualifies to study at a TVET college. The advantage of studying at a TVET college compared to public universities is that they are more accessible.

Who can study at a TVET college?

  • Students who have completed Grade 12
  • People who left school before completing Grade 12 including those who failed matric could, for example, complete a National Certificate (Vocational) on Level 4, which is equivalent to Grade 12
  • Adults who wish to enrol for formal study in study fields offered by TVET colleges.
