The school reopening dates have been pushed back by 2 weeks more than normal date due to how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed basic education in its entirety.

Learners attending school in rotation helped the department minimise infections amongst learners and teachers.

However, the school curriculum was not finished and learners spent less time in schools than normal.

Learning does not happen as it should in the event where pupils are not in contact with their teachers.

Department of Basic Education analyst, Professor Martin Gustafsson said:

If a child loses a week of school time, it’s approximately one and a half weeks of actual learning because of the way learning works, because of forgetting, and because of disruptions.
Teacher unions such as NAPTOSA disapproved of the DBE Minister’s proposed move for learning to continue throughout the September holidays, as the department attempts to finish the curriculum.

Lockdown levels were relaxed at the end of 2022 and the education department hadn’t reported any major challenges during the December examinations, excluding loadshedding.

DBE spokesperson said that the Minister will still need to engage a whole range of stakeholders, contact and consult the MEC’s in the provinces.
