As the academic year begins, many learners are still waiting to be placed at schools, however, according to the Basic Education spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, the department is doing everything they can to accommodate these learners as soon as possible.

This issue is due to large groups of learners moving to provinces, such as the Western Cape and Gauteng, and many parents have not verified whether they accept or decline the placement at schools.

In 2023/2024, the Covid-19 pandemic affected learning and teaching as less time was spent in the classroom.  To improve this matter, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has developed a recovery plan which will be implemented this year.

During the school holidays, usually, the school premises are broken into or vandalised and recently there have been terrible storms which may have damaged the classrooms. According to Mhlanga, any damage will be seen before learners return to school to ensure that nothing disrupts their learning.

In the event of another wave of Covid-19, the DBE has implemented procedures to ensure that learning is not affected and may continue.

All schools will also be provided with Covid-19 essentials to keep everyone safe.

Inland schools are ready to open on 12 January, which includes those in the:

  • Free State
  • Gauteng
  • North West
  • Limpopo
  • Mpumalanga

Coastal schools will open on 19 January, which includes schools in the following provinces:

  • Western Cape
  • KwaZulu-Natal
  • Eastern Cape
  • Northern Cape
