The Department of Basic Education has said that, in working with various stakeholders, it has managed to put together a few strategies to ensure that the sector makes it through 2022 without any hassles.
Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga said that the sector has incurred huge losses in teaching and learning throughout the course of 2022
However, despite this, the minister says that the department has managed to return about 80% of learners back to school. She also stated there was a significant decline in school closures in 2022, compared to 2020.
She added that the department has also been able to able to place the majority of learners although there have been issues in certain provinces such as Kwa-Zulu Natal, Western Cape and Gauteng. Motshekga appealed with parents to allow provinces to place learners where there are places for them.
On Covid-19 vaccinations, Motshekga stated that at the time the Department of Health announced that vaccines would be available for children aged 12 and above, the Department of Basic Education was busy with exams and could not initiate a vaccination programme.
She added that working in collaboration with school governing bodies (SGBs), with parents and the Department of Health, The Department will intensify its programme to encourage young people to get vaccinated.
The minister also pointed out that vaccinations will not be done in schools as the programme is solely managed by the Department of Health. She also pointed out that although parental consent is not a requirement for children to get vaccinated, they would seek at all costs to work with parents, and to get their permission.
