One SA leader (OSA), Mmusi Maimane has called for the 30% pass rate to be scrapped totally as he believes that the pass rate does not benefit the quality of education in South Africa as well as the economy.

A national petition by OSA has been signed by more than 3 400 people since it has been launched.

The organisation has also called for the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga to increase the matric pass mark from 30% to 50%.

DBE spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga emphasised in a podcast on Power987 that the message communicated is misleading.

AdvTech Group Academic Director Dr. Felicity Cochlear said

It’s not the mark that’s the problem. We do have significant challenges within the country around the quality of education and the quality of outputs…those obviously need to be addressed.

Cochlear further mentioned that the training of educators and the lack of resources in rural areas is amongst many issues that ought to be addressed in the schooling system.

Cochlear also proposed that benchmarking is something that ought to be considered to measure the level of language, mathematical and computer literacy one needs in order to be able to be active effectively in the economy and or to pursue some form of post-school education.

As there is a huge divide in education between the private education sector and the public education sector, AdvTech has encouraged for more collaboration to take place between the two sectors.

This collaboration will potentially bridge the gap between the sectors and to have some benchmarking that already exists in private schools.
