Millions of matriculants are awaiting their final exam results and have to decide what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives.
Some might achieve the grades they hoped for, others might decide to go onto further education, while some might be a little unsure about what to do next.
Many people will have done better than they thought they would have done and will have achieved more than they expected to this year. Others will have performed worse than expected and may feel disappointed, confused or angry. The reality is that performance in school does not always equate with performance on an exam. A person could be doing brilliantly in their class but fail the exam due to things outside their control such as illness, too much stress or even a bad day!
So rather than focusing on whether you have passed or failed, it is more important to focus on how you did. Did you do your best? If so, then that is all you can do and there is no use beating yourself up about it.

There are ways to cope with feelings of failure both during and after your exam.
1. Write down how you feel

2. Be realistic about your expectations
Expectations play an important role when it comes to academic performance. For example, if you have been top of the class since Grade R, it can be very disappointing to come across something you struggle with or don’t understand at all. The first thing you need to realise is that nothing stays the same forever, so if you are not satisfied with your results then this might be a time to take a break from schoolwork and try something new.
3. Find some support
Having someone on your side can help you cope with the results when they come out. Losing motivation is a real risk for teens so its good to have someone who understands what you are going through around to motivate you into doing better next time.
Trying to get it into a higher education institution can be difficult especially if you haven’t achieved the necessary grades for your dream tertiary institution.
Towards the end of high school is when everyone starts to think about what they want to do after matric. This could mean taking a gap year, doing an internship, working or going overseas.
