The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is one of the largest residential Universities of Technology in South Africa.

The university is one of the contact Teaching and Learning institutions who plans on returning its staff and students to campus based on the national disaster plan as well as the vaccination status of individuals at the university.

This return will however be limited as there are still Covid-19 restrictions in place to prevent outbreaks of the virus.

VUT has stated that students who need to be present on campus due to academic requirements, as well as those who need access to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) through data or WIFI are expected to return to campus accommodation.

ERT and continuous assessment (CASS, a series of compulsory tests) will be the main teaching and learning methods for the 2022 academic year at the university. Though there have been adjustments made to these methods.

All students enrolled for first year modules will return to campus for a third (33%) of their classes, this is because around an hour per week will be in person while all other teaching will take place online.

All students who are enrolled for final year exit level modules will have the assessments (CASS) occur in classrooms on campus.

While students who are attending practicals, including Advanced Diploma, Postgraduate and PhD students will also be required to return to campus for their practical classes.

VUT has stated that graduate students (Advanced, Postgraduate diploma, Masters & Doctorates) may have limited classroom engagement (20%) but these students have to monitor the VUTELA sites for more details on this.

These students will also have access to campus and the library.

All the students expected to attend face to face classes are advised to find accommodation close to the VUT campus.

Students enrolled in modules or programmes which do not require in person teaching and learning will continue through ERT and online assessments. These online assessments will be invigilated.

VUT currently has no vaccination exclusions, however only students who are on class lists for face to face teaching and learning will be able to access the campus.

The university will be screening people accessing the campus and Covid-19 protocols will be in place at all times.

VUT encourages all its students to vaccinate so that the university and the rest of the country may exit the National State of Disaster.

Classes will begin once the university has managed to finalise registration processes, which has been extended to give all students a fair chance to participate in academic activities.
