The matric class of 2023/2024 will be receiving their results as of 21 January 2023/2024.

There is been some confusion over the pass requirement for the Senior Certificate Exam.

However, there is no one passing mark for the matric examinations rather there are three levels – Bachelors, Diploma, and then the Higher certificate pass, and there are different requirements for the three levels.

To be eligible to receive the National Senior Certificate (NSC), you must earn at least 30% for each subject in which you are enrolled.

Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga explains

The 30 percent is not a pass, it’s conditional. If you look at the complex requirements that are there for everyone to enable them to pass either a Bachelor, Diploma or Higher Certificate.

The Department has come under fire, with critics expressing how the 30% passing mark will not only lower the quality of matriculants that South African schools produce but will also impact the number of learners gaining entry into Higher Education Institutions.

Mhlanga further mentions how they tried to recover as much of the time that was lost in 2020,  with the class of 2023/2024 they were supported in every possible way.

Covid-19 still existed but the most important question is, what can we expect from the matric class of 2023/2024?
