Mpumalanga Premier, Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane officially opened a new state-of-the-art school at the Steve Tshwete local municipality.
The cost of this school is estimated to be R57 million, this shows that the education department invested a large sum of money into this school in Middleberg.
Aerorand Primary School already has 500 learners as part of its first intake this year, however, its carrying capacity is 750 learners.
The Mbombela Local Municipality had the highest number of unplaced learners, with 841 learners in grade 8 and a few learners in grade 1 remain unplaced in the municipality.
Deputy Director General at the Mpumalanga Department of Education, Lucy Moyane admits that space remains a challenge for the province, especially in fast-growing towns.
Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga says:
There are plans to build more schools in suburbs.
Moyane is confident that the department will place learners within the first 10 days of learning.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has also apologised for the 700 unplaced learners in the province.
