2022 Applications for the Over 180 Schools Affected By KZN Storm? StatusApplications are Open 2022
A total of 186 schools were affected by the Kwa-Zulu Natal storms on Saturday, 15 January 2022. This is concerning as schools are set to open this coming Wednesday. Nonetheless, the KZN Education Department confirmed that they have started with processes to assist the affected schools.
MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Kwezi Mshengu paid a visit to the Emzamweni High School, Sweetwaters area in the UMgungundlovu District to assess damages caused by the recent storm.
This comes after the province had experienced one storm after the other in KwaZulu-Natal. In the most recent storm, 186 schools were affected.
This is concerning as KZN is amongst the coastal provinces that will start its learning this coming Wednesday, 19th January 2022.
The province confirmed that their infrastructural employees have been working around the clock since the December storm.
Schools that have the worse damages have been estimated to be 23, lots of money and resources will be needed for renovations.
Whereas, 90 schools will need mobile classrooms. The KZN Education Department said that they are in the process of providing those schools with mobile classrooms.
KwaZulu-Natal Education Department Communications Head, Muzi Mahlambi said:
We take leverage of the fact that learners are still rotating, so some of the schools that we have identified as needing mobile classrooms, will not be adversely affected due to the fact that not all learners are coming to school.
Mahlambi said the department has a plan to accommodate learners and teachers of the 23 badly affected schools.
As this is an inter-governmental issue, the Education Department is set to work with other departments in the province, such as COGTA and other departments because these storms has not only affected the school community but also residents in surrounding areas.
