Schools in two provinces are in a race to place pupils for grades one and two.
Education Minister Angie Motshekga has confirmed that 10 learners haven’t found placement as yet.
Tshegofatso Phala from the Equal Education Law Centre says that this is the result of high demand for certain schools.
Phala also shares how much this feels like a Deja Vu:
It has been a big occurrence at the beginning of the year. We have thousands of learners both inland and in our coastal provinces who sit at home being unplaced.
This causes the learners to be behind with schoolwork, this is further compromised by the rotational timetabling.
The first months of learning are highly critical for young minds.
Going to school doesn’t fall squarely on being literate and enjoying your right to basic education but looking at the South African context, to some learners, this ultimately means access to nutritional programs and psychological support.
The South African Schools Act clearly states that every MEC has a duty to ensure that there are enough school places in every school in their province.
Unfortunately, the MEC maintains that isn’t an easy task for them due to the oversubscription in schools.
