The government and its education department, through the constitution, affirmed section 29 that education is a right for children of this country. However, there have been instances of school stationery being withheld from learners because of a donation fee that they couldn’t afford to pay. What do the department and relevant stakeholders have to say about this?
The National Association of School Governing Body has condemned the actions of two schools in Mabopane for depriving children of stationery after the parents failed to pay R50 and clean the school’s premises as per the letter issued to the parents.
The two schools that have been reported to have been part of this are Tebogo Primary School and Nong primary School in Mabopane.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said donations are allowed in schools as they help improve school infrastructure.
But in instances of parents not being in the financial situation to pay for those donations, Angie emphasised that children should not be victimised.
National Association of School Governing Body has criticised the acts of both schools.
National Association of School Governing Body, National secretary Matakanye Matakanye agreed and said the following:
It is wrong when a school is referred to as a no-fee school then you make parents pay school fees through back doors. It is incorrect. It is illegal and it is a criminal activity.
Matakanye further mentioned that there are alternative ways of raising funds without excluding and discriminating against anybody.
The Body advised that schools should also open up to engaging parents in relation to alternate options that the school can use to raise their funds.
Fundraising events such as concerts are other ways that schools can generate money.
However, the law allows the School Governing Bodies to raise funds too.
