2022 Applications for the Umalusi Approves Release of Matric Results? StatusApplications are Open  2022

Umalusi has approved the release of the 2022 Matric results. The matric results is set to be announced by the Department of Basic Education on the evening of 20 January and released in just a few days on 21 January.

During their media briefing on Tuesday morning, Umalusi said that the Matric class of 2022 is the eighth grade 12 cohort to write their final exams under the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) but are also the ones who were subjected to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic for two years.

The class of 2022 was also the second grade 12 group to be assessed under health and safety conditions due to the National Lockdown.

Umalusi Chairperson, Prof. John Volmink, said:

The 2020 and 2022 academic years have been very difficult years due to the challenges posed by Covid-19 but Umalusi tried it’s best and remained faithful to it’s legislative mandate.

Umalusi took up the task of reviewing and moderating the results of learners since 16 December.

733 117 full-time and 162 793 part-time candidates sat down for the 2022 final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, bringing the total candidates to 896 710.

One irregularity the Council found was that some learners in Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng were given early access to Matric exam papers. Investigations on the matter are ongoing.

On calls to eradicate the 30% Matric pass rate, Umalusi said:

Unfortunately, this debate has been with us for quite some time and Umalusi has written articles on this matter in the past. In a nutshell, Umalusi’s position is that in line with international practice, there are three levels of passes.

These three Matric passes are Bachelor’s pass, Diploma pass and the Higher Certificate pass with Umalusi CEO, Mafu Rakometsi, explaining, “each level requires a specific combination of marks per subject, none of these levels require learners to pass their subjects with 30%”.

Umalusi is the quality assurance board responsible for standardising the Matric exams with the aim to ensure that the learners are not disadvantaged by factors outside their knowledge, abilities and aptitudes and to also achieve comparibility and consistency of learner performance.
