It’s been less than a month since schools reopened, yet the Gauteng Education Department has found itself dealing with a violent incident. This follows the passing of an educator who was fatally shot dead.

The Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is devastated by the death of a 50-year old female deputy principal from Phomolong Secondary School in Tembisa, who was allegedly shot dead on Friday, 21 January 2022.

The Gauteng Department of Education along with the police paid a visit to the mourning family, following their visit to the school in the morning.

Earlier, the Psycho-Social Unit from the Education Department visited the school to conduct counseling and support for all those affected by the incident.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the afternoon as she was driving out of the school gate.

Three gunmen suddenly appeared and allegedly shot her three times through the passenger window. After attempting to evade the hailstorm of bullets, she fell just beside the car.

It is alleged, that one of the gunmen shot her twice while she was on the ground, and they fled the scene without taking anything from her.

Police are further investigating the circumstances surrounding this fatal incident.

Gauteng Education Minister Panyaza Lesufi said in a statement:

We sincerely wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family and the entire school community. Indeed, the motive of this level is cruelty is unknown, but I’m comforted that this case has been taken over by the Provincial SAPS and as such we are adamant that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

Family spokesperson Yolo Ngendani said he appreciates the support from the education department and the police.
